Personal reflection #2

Writing again and again, summary 1, summary 2, essay 1, essay 2, and quizzes. I admit it, this course made us write too much. I may not happy with this course but I know that the more I write the more I get better in writing.

In summaries I learned how to get the information out from an essay .It was harder in the beginning but I got used on it. Let’s see where I can use what I learned in summaries. First, in future courses I may not be able to study a whole book so I can just get the main points and study them. Also I can use it in my research. I can’t read the whole resource. Another writing section was about how to write an essay. In this section I liked a website called “bibme.org”, this site was very helpful and completely free. In essay #1. I was able to choose my research subject, but in essay #2 I wasn’t .And that’s absolutely what made the second research harder. I wrote as much as I can. But unfortunately my research was horrible like” M.Gregory” said “your essay is short; the references are poor, and I don’t think the grade will be very good”, that’s was very disappointment.

In the End, I learned things, some of them are related to the course others not. First I have to do everything in time, and never delay my duty. Secondly, the more I write the more I get better.

Essay #2

Story of stuff

The story of stuff is a 20-minute film or presentation that shows and exposes many facts about stuff for the public, but Annie Leonard the presenter of the film thinks that there is much more than these steps. The public who didn’t see the film, all they know is the 5 steps (Extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. The film includes a lot of facts about T.V and advertisement; advertisement can be a motive for the viewer to buy the product that he saw in T.V. This essay will discuss five main things about stuff.

First step of making stuffs is extraction, well extraction means cutting the trees, taking woods, fuel, and water, anything from the planet resources. The planet can renew some of the resources, but the fact is that we are destroying and using the resources faster than the time that take the planet to renew the resources. Extraction can also be dangerous for our health, for example the sites of extraction oil and gas there is toxics. Some countries respect the people and they make these sites away from crowded cities, but some countries they don’t care about others health. Toxics can make diseases and asthma.

Next step of making stuff is production. In production we make things or the resources from the planet to something with value.    The Industrial production has many environment problems like: climate change, water depletion, waste and toxic pollution. Also if we use toxics in production systems will keep us getting toxics in our air and food. These toxics cause many diseases. But on the other hand the production can be clean and good by designing safety system for the production. Moreover, they should plane and solve these problems. Also, they should Use materials and energy judiciously and equitably.

The Third step of making stuff is Distribution. The Distribution involved in the process of making a product or service available for use or consumption by a consumer or business user. It can be quickly and cheaply or slowly and expensively. The energy is a used to transport all the stuff around the world.

Let’s move to consumption, in consumption we use materials that we bought it from the shops.(”99% of the stuff we run through this system is trashed within 6 months”)(Annie Leonard). Many consumers get motivated to buy this stuff from the T.V.

In UAE, Consumers are more attractive to electronic products or brand products (“More than 71 per cent of UAE respondents said they would promote a brand's products and services if there was a good cause behind it.”)(Armina.L)

In the End, there is always something new to buy. No one can safe from T.V advertises. Think more before you buy anything from shops, so you don’t waste your money on useless things.

Essay #1

Twitter

Twitter is an online social networking service and a small blog. Twitter allows the users to write 140 characters in massages known as “tweets”. However, the tweets are limited for a 1 day. In order to see your friend activates you must follow him and the opposite is right. The more people you follow the more you have to read.

Twitter website opened in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, and Biz Stone. It started as a side project but a lot of people signed in, and now millions around the world using Twitter to keep in touch with families and friends. The idea came first from Jack Dorsey. He was trying to find the best way of keeping in touch with friends. Williams had joined with Biz and Dorsey, from which Twitter was born. “Williams has been named one of the 25 most influential people on the web by Time magazine” (Beaumont.2008). Jack Dorsey was a student in New York City but he moved to California. Biz Stone also have a hand on creating Twitter. He remains the creative director of twitter.

Well, what can we say about twitter growth? It’s something incredible happened so fast, Twitter started to be famous since 2007. It had 400,000 tweets posted per quarter and these 400,000 tweets became 100 million in 2008.Twitter users started to be active more than before they were posting nearly 49 tweets each day. A lot of users registered for twitter and twitter started to gain its growth and so on, in March 2011 there were 140 million tweets posted each day. Many ranking websites ranked twitter and as mentioned on Compete.com, Twitter had the third highest ranking. In 2010 the company started to work on making a new look of twitter “New Twitter” they were trying to change the entire look of the homepage and adding some new features like “retweet” button if you want to say like your friend, but the best thing been added to the new look is the links feature that you can surf the link without leaving twitter, image or video whatever it’s.

Twitter is not like other social networks, every social network have her own style, and her own features. However Twitter make people more addicted when they sign and write their tweets. Users will feel like they are living in between the worlds of blogging, instant messages, and Emails. Facebook fans will not get into twitter too much, because Twitter is a piece of Facebook. “When asked why they love Twitter, users say like I can ask a question and get an instantaneous response.”(Steve. 2009).

In the end, all social networks are simply communication tools. Every social network has advantages and disadvantages. In fact most users when they joined twitter they tweets useless updates like “am going to have a lunch with….” However Facebook and Twitter are the best networks for now, each can have great or little value to anyone; it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish in a given situation.

Personal Reflection #1

“LSC course is boring”, that’s the first sentence got into
my mind when I joined the course. But after some lessons I started to enjoy the
class for several reasons.
First of all, I said: “the course is boring” because I
joined too late, I missed 3 weeks of studying. I didn’t know what the benefits
of this course. However, Mr. Gregory helped me a lot. From that moment I
changed my opinion about the course.
Secondly, the citation lessons are very important,
researches in our future courses should contain the citation, which we are
studying now. BibMe.org this site that been recommended by Mr. Gregory is very useful,
it will shorten a lot of time that we don’t have to complete any research in
future studying.
Thirdly, summaries lessons are very important to improve our
reading skills by finding the main keys or sentences. For example if we don’t have
the time to read a research that contain more than 600 words, we can just scan
the text for key sentences.
Last thing, is the vocabulary quizzes, we can do it anywhere
in home or in college. It doesn’t matter if I failed in one of them because I have
unlimited attempts. But the exciting thing is that the next quiz will not open until
I success in the one before him.
In Conclusion, this course will be very helpful and am sure
of it. Despite I joined the course 3 weeks later but I am improved a lot in
this period. All thanks to our great teacher Mr. Gregory.

Houbara bustards
Houbara is a bird that threatened to be extinct. But there is
a group that trying to prevent this from happening, there is a fund that been
setup in 2006 to supervise those groups. The responsible people of taking care
of Houbara are trying to reach a goal to release 15,000 birds per season. In
order to reach that goal they manage every stage of bird’s life. Birds that are
ready for breeding are trained to be ready with humans. When the females are inseminated,
they take about 4 days to lay eggs. When the chicks are 9 month old they
released in 2 groups each spring and autumn. 1 year later an average of 65 per
cent survives. That’s not the end, scientists observe the birds after they
released.

Summary 1

A bright idea within reach

UAE is already using Solar panels on
parking meters .Also some few buildings, hotels and office blocks use solar
heaters for water systems. The market for solar products is so small in
UAE. Ameen Lakhani points that there is
are three to four hours of peak time when solar energy can be collected in
Europe whereas there are six to seven hours in the UAE. John.O a representative
of a solar water-heating systems company believes that solar energy as an
alternative would be beneficial to the national economy. Solar energy will
lessen greenhouse emissions by reducing the burning of fossils fuels for energy
needs. As the population increase the need to search for alternative energy
like solar should be seriously looked into. However, despite repeated requests
there was no response of their” policy on solar energy in the country”(John
Shalini)
